Institutional Resources

Institutions have a responsibility to foster cultures of research integrity.

Authorship plays a key role in driving such culture; thus, institutions must support healthy authorship practices among their faculty, trainees, and staff. This is particularly true because journal editorial offices typically refer authorship disputes back to the home institution of the corresponding author.

What can institutions do?

Did you know that only 24% of the 266 Carnegie R1 and R2 Universities (in 2018) had publicly available authorship policies?

If your institution doesn’t have an authorship policy in place, we encourage you to consider adopting an existing policy (like the one that we developed at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte) or developing one of your own.
